John van de Ruit

John Howard van de Ruit is a South African novelist, actor, playwright, and producer best known for his internationally acclaimed "Spud" series. His debut novel, "Spud," published in 2005, became a runaway success in South Africa and earned him the 2006 Bookseller's Choice Award. The sequel, "Spud: The Madness Continues...," followed in 2007, further cementing his reputation as a bestselling author. The film rights to "Spud" were also acquired, with production commencing in 2008.

Before establishing himself as a novelist, van de Ruit built a career in theater as a professional actor, playwright, and producer. He collaborated with Ben Voss on the satirical sketch show "Green Mamba," which toured extensively across Southern Africa after its 2002 debut. His background in drama and performance, including a Master's degree from the University of Natal, informs his sharp, humorous writing style. Van de Ruit's works often blend wit and poignant storytelling, drawing from his experiences growing up in Durban and attending Michaelhouse, where he matriculated in 1993.
