John Herbert Varley, commonly known as John Varley, is a bestselling science fiction author. His works are renowned for their exploration of big ideas, compelling characters, and plausible science. Varley was born in Austin, Texas, but spent his formative years in Fort Worth and later in Port Arthur. He graduated from Nederland High School before attending Michigan State University.
Varley's interest in science fiction began early in his life. After dropping out of college, he spent a year traveling with a friend and later attempted to become a hippie. However, it was not until 1973 that he decided to pursue a career as a science fiction author. This decision came after he wrote his first piece of fiction, a short story titled "Picnic on Nearside."
Varley's debut novel, "The Ophiuchi Hotline," was published in 1977 and marked the beginning of his successful writing career. His works often feature big ideas and fluid genders, as well as sentient black holes and mind uploading. His most popular series, the "Eight World" series, is set in the future in a densely populated solar system. The series explores various themes, including the impact of overpopulation and the implications of advanced technology on human society.
Throughout his career, Varley has received numerous accolades for his work. He has won both the Hugo and Nebula awards, two of the most prestigious awards in the science fiction genre. His writing is characterized by its imaginative storytelling, compelling characters, and plausible science, making him one of the most respected and admired science fiction authors of his generation.
