John W. Dower

John W. Dower is a historian and author specializing in modern Japanese history and U.S.-Japan relations. He is best known for his critically acclaimed work "Embracing Defeat," which earned both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. His other notable publications include "War Without Mercy," winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award, and "Cultures of War." Dower's scholarship explores themes of conflict, memory, and reconciliation in postwar Japan and its complex relationship with the United States.

A professor emeritus of history at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dower has dedicated his career to examining the cultural and political dynamics between Japan and the U.S., particularly during and after World War II. His writing combines rigorous historical analysis with accessible prose, making his work influential in both academic and public discourse. In 2002, he co-founded the "Visualizing Cultures" project at MIT, an innovative digital initiative focused on image-driven scholarship about East Asia. Dower resides in Boston, Massachusetts, where he continues to contribute to historical research and writing.
