Jon Stallworthy was a distinguished poet, literary critic, and academic, renowned for his contributions to English literature and war poetry. Born in London in 1935 to New Zealand parents, he began writing poetry at an early age and later won the Newdigate Prize while studying at Magdalen College, Oxford. Over his career, he published seven volumes of poetry and authored acclaimed biographies of poets Wilfred Owen and Louis MacNeice. His editorial work included the influential "Oxford Book of War Poetry," solidifying his reputation as an authority on the subject.
Stallworthy's writing often explored themes of family history, war, and personal reflection. His poetry collection "A Familiar Tree" drew inspiration from archival discoveries about his missionary ancestors, while his autobiography, "Singing School," traced his evolution as a poet. A dedicated scholar, he served as Professor of English at Cornell University and later as Professor Emeritus at Oxford, where he was twice Acting President of Wolfson College. His expertise in war poetry earned him the Wilfred Owen Poetry Award in 2010, alongside fellowships in the Royal Society of Literature and the British Academy. Stallworthy's legacy endures through his meticulous scholarship and evocative verse.
