Joseph Campbell

Joseph Campbell was an American author and scholar renowned for his contributions to comparative mythology. Born in New York City in 1904, he developed an early fascination with mythology, particularly Native American cultures, which shaped his academic pursuits. His seminal work, "The Hero with a Thousand Faces," published in 1949, established his theory of the monomyth - a universal pattern of heroic narratives found across cultures. This groundbreaking study, along with his four-volume series "The Masks of God," solidified his reputation as a leading authority on mythic storytelling.

Campbell's academic background spanned medieval literature, psychology, and world religions, influenced by figures such as Carl Jung, James Joyce, and Sigmund Freud. After studying at Columbia University and European institutions, he taught at Sarah Lawrence College for decades while collaborating on translations of Hindu texts like "The Upanishads." His interdisciplinary approach blended art, literature, and anthropology, culminating in works like "Myths to Live By" and "The Historical Atlas of World Mythology." Campbell's ideas reached a global audience through his 1988 PBS interviews with Bill Moyers, posthumously released as "The Power of Myth," which popularized his exploration of mythology's enduring relevance to human experience.
