Joseph Monninger is a renowned author, known for his fiction and young adult novels, as well as his nonfiction works. Monninger was raised in Westfield, New Jersey, and received a football scholarship to Temple University. His love for adventure and the outdoors led him to volunteer in the Peace Corps in Upper Volta, now Burkina Faso, from 1975 to 1977.

He has fly fished in the Wind River Range in Wyoming and New Zealand and has been a certified New Hampshire Fishing Guide. Monninger has also participated in Sled Dog sprint races in New England and operated a sled dog business in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
