Judith Butler

Judith Butler is a Distinguished Professor in the Graduate School at the University of California, Berkeley, specializing in rhetoric and comparative literature. They are a prominent post-structuralist philosopher whose influential works span feminism, queer theory, political philosophy, and ethics. Butler gained widespread recognition for their groundbreaking book "Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity," which challenged conventional notions of gender and identity. Other notable publications include "Bodies that Matter," "Undoing Gender," and "The Psychic Life of Power," which further developed their theories on performativity and power dynamics.

Butler's academic career began with their doctoral dissertation, later published as "Subjects of Desire: Hegelian Reflections in Twentieth-Century France." Their research explores diverse themes, from literary theory and modern philosophical fiction to Jewish philosophy and critiques of state violence. Butler has co-authored and co-edited several works, including "Who Sings the Nation-State?" with Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak and "Contingency, Hegemony, Universality" with Slavoj Žižek and Ernesto Laclau. Their recent publications, such as "The Force of Nonviolence" and "Who's Afraid of Gender?," continue to engage with pressing social and political issues, cementing their reputation as a leading critical thinker.
