Juliet Marillier

Juliet Marillier is a distinguished author of historical fantasy novels, hailing from New Zealand. She was born in Dunedin and grew up in a household enriched by Celtic music and stories, which would later serve as a significant source of inspiration for her writing. Marillier has a deep-seated love for folklore and history, which is evident in her works. She currently resides in Western Australia, in a century-old cottage by the river, where she spends her time writing and caring for a group of rescue dogs.

Marillier's passion for music and languages led her to study at the University of Otago, where she graduated with a BA and a Bachelor of Music (Hons). Her academic background, coupled with her lifelong interest in mythology and folklore, has greatly influenced her writing. She has authored twenty-one historical fantasy novels for adults and young adults, as well as a collection of short fiction. Marillier's works have been widely recognized and have won numerous awards, including five Aurealis Awards and four Sir Julius Vogel Awards. Her writing is so highly regarded that it has even convinced skeptics to give the fantasy genre a second chance.

Marillier's first series, the Sevenwaters Trilogy, was inspired by her Celtic-Gaelic roots. She is also a member of the druid order OBOD (the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids), which reflects her deep appreciation for ancient Celtic traditions and spirituality. Marillier is a prolific writer, and her works continue to captivate audiences with their blend of historical detail, mythology, and engaging storytelling. She is also a dedicated foster carer for an animal rescue group and has four adult children and eight grandchildren.
