Kami Garcia is a highly accomplished American author, particularly known for her work in the young adult fantasy genre. She was born in Washington D.C. and grew up in the surrounding area, where she developed a keen interest in writing and supernatural phenomena from a young age. Garcia would often write poetry in spiral notebooks and had a strong belief in the paranormal, so much so that she could never sleep in a hotel room numbered '13'.
Before becoming an author, Garcia obtained a Master's degree in education and worked as a teacher for fourteen years. Her roots may be in the South, but she has spent most of her life in Washington D.C. and Los Angeles, where she currently resides with her husband, two children, and their dogs. In her spare time, Garcia enjoys listening to Soundgarden, watching disaster movies, and drinking Diet Coke.
Garcia has achieved significant success in her writing career, becoming a #1 New York Times, USA Today, and international bestselling author. She is perhaps best known for co-authoring the Beautiful Creatures series with Margaret Stohl, which has been published in over 50 countries and translated into 37 languages, with over 10 million copies in print. The series was adapted into a feature film by Warner Brothers in 2013.
In addition to her work on the Beautiful Creatures series, Garcia has authored several solo novels, including the Bram Stoker Award-nominated novels Unbreakable and Unmarked (THE LEGION series) and The X-Files Origins: Agent of Chaos. She has also written graphic novels, including Teen Titans: Raven, with artist Gabriel Picolo, and Joker/Harley: Criminal Sanity, from DC Black Label. Garcia is also a co-founder of the YALLFEST kid lit book festival and a board member of YALLWest, the sister festival. She is a member of the NaNoWriMo Writer's Board and has an MA in education, having worked as a teacher for seventeen years before co-authoring her first novel on a dare from her students.
