Kara H.L. Chen

Kara H.L. Chen is a Taiwanese American writer known for her contributions to young adult and middle grade literature. She holds an MFA in fiction from Brooklyn College and has authored two novels: her debut, "Love & Resistance," published by Quill Tree/HarperCollins, and its follow-up, "Asking for a Friend." Her work has garnered critical recognition, including a 2024 Ohioana Book Award finalist distinction for "Love & Resistance" in the Middle Grade & Young Adult Literature category. The novel was also selected for the California Department of Education’s "Recommended Literature List" for Grades 9-12.

Chen’s writing explores themes relevant to young readers, blending contemporary storytelling with cultural and social resonance. Her second novel, "Asking for a Friend," continued this trajectory, earning a 2025 Ohio Book Award finalist nomination in the young adult category. With a focus on authentic narratives and relatable characters, Chen’s work has established her as a distinctive voice in modern YA fiction.
