Kat Falls

Kat Falls is a distinguished American author, well-known for her science fiction, urban fantasy, young adult, and adventure novels. Born in 1964 in Silver Spring, Maryland, Falls pursued her undergraduate degree from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and furthered her education by obtaining a Master of Fine Arts in screenwriting from Northwestern University. Her writing career took off in 2010 with the publication of her first novel, Dark Life, which was released by Scholastic Corporation and quickly gained international success, selling in 18 markets and being translated into 17 languages.

Falls currently resides in Evanston, IL, with her husband, theater director Robert Falls, their three children, and a variety of pets. She is a dedicated author of middle-grade science fiction novels, which she describes as "underwater westerns." Dark Life, her debut novel, was the product of a writing exercise where she combined her 11-year-old son's interests in the ocean, Wild West pioneers, and the X-Men. The novel was met with widespread acclaim and has been nominated for children's book awards in ten states. It has also been featured on the Today Show and is currently in development for film at Disney with The Gotham Group producing.

In addition to Dark Life, Falls is the author of the sequel, Rip Tide, and a young adult novel, Inhuman, which is the first book in a science fiction trilogy set in the near future after a plague has turned millions of people into feral beast-men. Inhuman received glowing reviews and was nominated for the Tome Society It List for "clean" teen reads.

Falls is also an instructor at Northwestern University and a sought-after speaker at schools and writing conferences across the country. She continues to be an influential voice in the world of young adult and science fiction literature, drawing inspiration from her family and her surroundings in Evanston, IL.
