McCarthy was born in Croydon in 1960 and attended Dulwich College in South East London before going on to study at St George Hospital Medical School. After graduating with a medical degree, he pursued specialist pathology training and worked with London's Royal Marsden Hospital. He received his Ph.D. while still in training and became a member of the Royal College of Pathologists in 1995. In addition to his work as a pathologist, McCarthy has been writing crime thrillers for many years and has also branched out into screenwriting for TV and film. He is known for his meticulous attention to detail in his writing, striving to accurately depict the work of pathologists in his novels. McCarthy has published over 25 novels and short stories, mostly in the genre of forensic thriller and mystery, with some falling slightly outside of these genres. His most recent work, "To Mourn a Mischief," was published by Endeavour and is available as an ebook.
