Kentarou Miura is a highly acclaimed manga author from Japan, best known for his dark fantasy series, Berserk. Born in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan in 1966, Miura has been creating manga since a young age. At the early age of 10, he made his first manga, Miuranger, and by the time he was in middle school, his drawing techniques had significantly improved. Miura's first dōjinshi was published in a magazine in 1982, the same year he enrolled in an artistic curriculum in high school. His work Futanabi was nominated Best New Author work in Weekly Shōnen Magazine, and he also published another manga, Noa, in the same year.
Miura's career hit a slump after a disagreement with one of the editors, but he made a comeback in 1988 with the 48-page manga Berserk Prototype. In 1989, he started a project titled King of Wolves based on a script by Buronson, and in the same year, he published the prequel to Berserk, Ourou Den. The first volume of Berserk was released in 1990 with limited success, but its popularity grew after it was serialized in Young Animal in 1992 with the release of "The Golden Age" story arc. Miura's fame grew, and he dedicated himself solely to working on Berserk. In 1997, he supervised the production of 25 anime episodes of Berserk and has since released various art books and supplemental materials based on the series.
Miura's work has been highly acclaimed, and he has received several awards for his manga. In 2002, he received the second place in the Osamu Tezuka Culture Award of Excellence for Berserk. He has also provided the design for the Vocaloid Kamui Gakupo. Unfortunately, Miura passed away on May 6, 2021, due to acute aortic dissection. His work, Berserk, has spanned 34 tankōbon with no end in sight and has inspired a whole host of merchandise, both official and fan-made.
