Larry Millett

Larry Millett is an accomplished American author, journalist, and architectural critic. Born and raised in Minneapolis, Millett pursued his higher education in his home state, earning a bachelor's degree in English from St. John's University and a master's degree from the University of Chicago. His professional journey began as a general assignment reporter for the St. Paul Pioneer Press in 1972, where he later became the newspaper's first architecture critic after a year of study at the University of Michigan.

Millett's writing career is unique, combining his interests in journalism, architectural history, and mystery fiction. He made his debut as an author in 1985 with the publication of "The Curve of the Arch." Since then, he has written twelve non-fiction books, including "Lost Twin Cities," which has been in continuous print for over two decades. Millett's fiction writing started in 1996 when he brought Sherlock Holmes to Minnesota in "The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes and the Red Demon." He has since published seven other novels featuring Holmes, Dr. Watson, and St. Paul saloonkeeper Shadwell Rafferty.

In addition to his Sherlock Holmes series, Millett has written a historical mystery novel series set in Minneapolis in the 1890s, featuring a character named Shadwell Rafferty. He is also known for his work as an architectural critic for the St. Paul Pioneer Press and has written for several historical and architectural magazines in the Midwestern United States. Millett's ability to combine fact and fiction creates a highly realistic style that's well-rooted in reality, making his books a delight for mystery and history enthusiasts. He currently resides in St. Paul's historic West Seventh Street neighborhood with his wife and occasional writing partner, Jodie Ahern.
