Laura Anne Gilman is an accomplished author of fantasy, horror, and mystery novels, as well as a skilled editor and teacher. Born and raised in the suburbs of New Jersey in the late 1960s, Gilman pursued a career in publishing after graduating from Skidmore College. She worked her way up to the position of Executive Editor at New American Library/Penguin (USA) over the course of fifteen years. However, Gilman's true passion lay in writing, and she made the decision to leave her editing job behind in 2004 to become a full-time freelancer.
Gilman's work has received critical acclaim from publications such as NPR and Publishers Weekly. She has won the Endeavor Award for her novel "The Cold Eye" and has been shortlisted for a Nebula, another Endeavor Award, and a Washington State Book Award. Her writing is known for its deft plotting and first-class characters. Gilman's bibliography includes the "Devil's West" trilogy, the "Cosa Nostradamus" urban fantasy series, the "Vineart" trilogy, and the short story collection "West Winds' Fool." Her upcoming work, "Uncanny Times," is set to be released by Saga Books in 2022. Gilman currently resides in Seattle, where she shares her home with a cat, a dog, and many deadlines.
In addition to her writing and editing career, Gilman is also a member of various professional organizations such as the BookView Café, Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, and Novelist, Inc. Despite her success as a writer, Gilman remains humble about her talents. When asked about her writing, she has stated that she has always been focused on her goals and has always written dark-edged stories. Some astrologers have even noted that Gilman has ten planets in the same house, which is the house that governs publishing. However, Gilman has stated that she thinks it is all nonsense. Despite her skepticism, Gilman's successful career as a writer is a testament to her talent and dedication to her craft.
