Laura Joh Rowland

Laura Joh Rowland is a successful author of historical fiction and mystery novels. Born in the United States, Rowland is of Chinese and Korean descent, with parents who were immigrants. She grew up in Michigan and pursued her higher education at the University of Michigan, where she earned a B.S. in microbiology and a Master of Public Health. In her past, Rowland has held various positions in different fields including chemistry, microbiology, sanitary inspection, and quality engineering. She has also survived a natural disaster, having lost her home in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina.

Rowland is best known for her two popular series, the Sano Ichiro series and the Secret Adventures of Charlotte Bronte series. The Sano Ichiro series is set in Japan during the end of the feudal era, specifically in Edo during the late 17th century. The series features the protagonist Sano Ichiro, a detective, and has gained worldwide recognition. Rowland's work has been published in over 20 countries and has won several awards, including RT Magazine’s Reader’s Choice Award and a spot on The Wall Street Journal’s list of the five best historical mystery novels.

In addition to her two successful series, Rowland has also ventured into Victorian England with her Sarah Bain series, which includes "A Mortal Likeness" and "The Hangman’s Secret." She has also been recognized for her work as a painter and cartoonist. Rowland currently resides in New York City with her husband.
