Laura Pohl is a Brazilian author, best known for her Young Adult (YA) science fiction and fantasy novels. She is the author of the popular "Last 8" series. Pohl was born in Braunschweig, Germany, to Brazilian parents who loved to travel. She spent her early years in Curitiba, Brazil, before moving to Sydney, Australia at the age of thirteen. It was in Australia that she started learning English and discovered her passion for young adult and middle-grade books, which she read extensively at the Marrickville Library. After a year in Sydney, she returned to Curitiba to finish her schooling.
Pohl's love for writing began when she won a letter to Santa writing contest at the age of ten. She spent her free time during high school writing Percy Jackson and Naruto fanfiction, and by the time she was eighteen, she had decided to become an author. She moved to Sao Paulo and pursued a degree in Literature at the University of Sao Paulo. Currently, she works as a freelance translator and editor. Pohl is known for her unique writing style, often writing messages in caps lock and refraining from using autocorrect. She is a fan of Star Wars, and loves to quote Hamilton and fangirl about the franchise.
Pohl's debut novel, The Last 8, won the International Latino Book Awards. She is also the author of The Grimrose Girls, which became a New York Times best-seller. Pohl's writing is heavily influenced by her Brazilian heritage, and she is passionate about creating diverse and inclusive stories. She is represented by Kari Sutherland at Bradford Literary. In her free time, she enjoys taking pictures of her dog, curling up with a fantasy or science-fiction book, and replaying Dragon Age. Her favorite Disney princess is Cinderella, and her favorite Disney prince is Kylo Ren. Pohl is a proud Brazilian and makes her home in São Paulo.
