Loren Long

Loren Long is an acclaimed author and illustrator known for his work in children's literature. He gained widespread recognition for illustrating the modern edition of the classic tale "The Little Engine That Could," as well as creating the beloved "Otis" series. His illustrations have brought to life award-winning books such as Angela Johnson’s "I Dream of Trains," Randall DeSeve’s "Toy Boat," and Walt Whitman’s "When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer." Long’s contributions to children’s publishing have earned him prestigious accolades, including the Golden Kite Award and Parents’ Choice Gold Award.

Long’s artistic style is deeply influenced by American School painters like Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood, as well as the Works Progress Administration muralists. Growing up in Lexington, Kentucky, he developed a passion for storytelling through visuals, approaching his illustrations as if crafting scenes for a film. Before transitioning to children’s books, Long worked in commercial art, creating greeting cards, theater posters, and magazine illustrations. His shift to publishing allowed him to connect directly with young readers, a fulfillment he cherishes.
