Naguib Mahfouz

Naguib Mahfouz, born on December 11, 1911, in Cairo, Khedivate of Egypt, is a highly acclaimed Egyptian author. He is celebrated as one of the first contemporary writers in Arabic literature to delve into existentialism and is the only Egyptian to have won the prestigious Nobel Prize in Literature, which he received in 1988. Mahfouz was a prolific writer, having published over 50 novels, more than 350 short stories, several movie scripts, and five plays throughout his 70-year career.

Drawing from his studies in philosophy and his passion for Western literature, Mahfouz was significantly influenced by authors such as Flaubert, Balzac, Zola, Camus, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, and Proust. His works are known for their range, from his earliest historical romances to his later experimental novels. Mahfouz's writing is not limited to a particular genre or style, as he explores various themes and techniques, reflecting his versatility and literary evolution.

His extensive body of work has garnered international recognition and has been adapted into numerous Egyptian and foreign films.
