Nancy Thayer is a bestselling author of women’s fiction, known for her family sagas that often involve romance and mystery. Born in Emporia, Kansas, in 1943, Thayer has published over 30 novels, including the Hot Flash Club series and standalone novels such as “Family Reunion” and “Secrets in Summer.” Before becoming a full-time writer, she taught English in various parts of Europe. Thayer’s writing is often characterized by her humorous take on growing older.
Thayer has lived on Nantucket Island year-round for 38 years with her husband, Charley Walters. They have two children and five grandchildren. Her daughter, Samantha Wilde, is also a successful author. Thayer’s upbringing in Kansas and her experiences in Europe have influenced her writing, providing her with a unique perspective that she brings to her novels. She has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in English literature from the University of Missouri at Kansas City and has been a Fellow at the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference. Thayer’s first novel, “Stepping,” was published in 1980, and she has since published over 30 novels, all of which are available on Amazon.
Thayer’s novels often explore themes of family and friendships, which she believes are the foundation of a happy, if complicated, life. She has received the RT Career Achievement Award and has a special connection to Nantucket Island, where she has lived for over 30 years. Thayer loves the island most in the winter when the waves crash dramatically on the shore, and she often incorporates her experiences and observations of the island into her writing. When she’s not writing, Thayer enjoys walking on the beach with her husband, entertaining their grandchildren, and spending time with friends.
