Nathan Ballingrud is a highly acclaimed American author, best known for his dark fantasy fiction and horror stories. His work has been recognized with several prestigious award nominations and wins. Ballingrud's 2015 novella, "The Visible Filth," gained significant attention when it was adapted into the movie "Wounds" in 2019. Produced by Babak Anvar and distributed by Annapurna Pictures, the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January of that year.
One of Ballingrud's most notable accolades includes the Shirley Jackson Award for Best Short Story in 2007, which he received for his story "The Monsters of Heaven." In 2013, his collection of short stories, "North American Lake Monsters," was awarded the Shirley Jackson Award for Best Single Short Story Collection. The same collection was also nominated for the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a Fiction Collection and shortlisted for both the World Fantasy Award for Best Collection and the British Fantasy Award for Best Collection.
Nathan Ballingrud is the author of "North American Lake Monsters: stories," published by Small Beer Press in July 2013. Currently, he is working on his first novel and several more short stories. Ballingrud resides in Asheville, North Carolina, with his daughter. He describes himself as an author of dark fantasy and horror, drawn to exploring the complexities of a world that he finds to be both dark and unforgiving, yet beautiful.
