Nathan Englander is a highly acclaimed contemporary fiction writer in the United States, recognized for his works that often draw from his Orthodox Jewish upbringing. Born in Long Island, New York in 1970, Englander has established himself as a prominent figure in American literature, with his works appearing in prestigious publications such as The New Yorker, The Atlantic Monthly, and several anthologies including The Best American Short Stories and The Pushcart Prize.
His debut collection of short stories, "For the Relief of Unbearable Urges," published in 1999, was a critical success. It won the Sue Kauffman Prize for First Fiction and the Faulkner/PEN Malamud Award by the American Award of Arts and Letters. Englander's works have been translated into more than a dozen languages, a testament to his global appeal. He has also been recognized as one of the top twenty writers of the century by The New Yorker and has been the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a PEN/Malamud Award, the Bard Fiction Prize, and the Sue Kaufman Prize from the American Academy of Arts & Letters.
Englander's literary portfolio includes novels such as "The Ministry of Special Cases" and "Dinner at the Center of the Earth," which explore the Orthodox Jewish experience of the Holocaust and the modern Palestinian-Israeli conflict. His short story collection "What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank" made the shortlist for the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction in 2012. In addition to his fiction, Englander has also written plays and translated literary works. His play "The Twenty-Seventh Man" premiered at The Public Theater, and his translation "New American Haggadah" was published by Little Brown. He also co-translated Etgar Keret's "Suddenly A Knock at the Door." Englander is a dedicated educator, teaching in the Graduate Writing Program at Hunter College and in the summer for NYU's Writers in Paris program. He lives in Brooklyn, New York and Madison, Wisconsin.
