Neil McMahon is a distinguished American author, well-known for his thriller, mystery, science fiction, horror, fantasy, and suspense novels. He has written a total of ten novels, which can be divided into two separate series: the Carroll Monks series and the Hugh Davoren series. Both series feature the chief protagonists Carroll Monks and Hugh Davoren, respectively.

McMahon was born in 1949 in Chicago, where he was raised. He later attended Stanford University and earned a degree in psychology. Since 1971, he has lived in Missoula, Montana. In addition to writing, McMahon has also spent a significant amount of time working in carpentry. He often collaborates with his wife, Kim, who coordinates the annual Montana Festival.

McMahon is also known for his collaboration with James Patterson on the book "Toys," which became a number one bestseller in the New York Times. During the late 1980s, McMahon wrote three horror novels under the pseudonym Daniel Rhodes. These novels have since been reissued as ebooks. McMahon's writing style is highly regarded by fellow writers such as James Crumley, William Kittredge, Michael Connelly, and Annick Smith. While studying at Stanford, he received the Stegner Fellowship.

McMahon has published a dozen thrillers, including "TOYS," which he co-authored with James Patterson and became a #1 New York Times bestseller. He holds a degree in psychology from Stanford and has worked as a carpenter for many years. His wife, Kim, coordinates the annual Montana Festival Of The Book. They live in Missoula, Montana, with the world's noisiest cat, Emma. McMahon has always been fascinated by supernatural fiction, and his first three novels, written in the 1980s, were in that genre. In 2015, he released a new supernatural horror thriller, "THE SHADOW KIND," set in a haunted New England reminiscent of H.P. Lovecraft's work.
