O. Henry

O. Henry, the pen name of William Sydney Porter, was an American short story writer renowned for his wit, vivid characterizations, and surprise endings. Among his most celebrated works are "Cabbages and Kings," a collection of interwoven tales set in a fictional Central American country, and "The Four Million," which captures the lives of everyday New Yorkers. His stories often explored themes of irony, redemption, and the unexpected twists of fate, earning him widespread acclaim during his lifetime and enduring popularity posthumously.

Porter's own life was marked by both hardship and literary success. After working various jobs, including as a draftsman and bank clerk, he fled to Honduras to avoid embezzlement charges but returned upon his wife's illness. Serving a prison sentence, he began writing short stories, publishing under the pseudonym O. Henry to conceal his identity. Upon his release, he moved to New York, where he became a prolific author, producing collections such as "The Trimmed Lamp," "Heart of the West," and "The Voice of the City." His posthumously published works, including "The Gentle Grafter" and "Rolling Stones," further cemented his legacy. Many of his stories, including "A Retrieved Reformation," were adapted into films and plays, showcasing his enduring influence on American literature.
