Oscar Hijuelos

Oscar Hijuelos was an acclaimed American novelist and the first Hispanic writer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Born in New York City to Cuban immigrant parents, he gained widespread recognition for his novel "The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love," which earned the prestigious award in 1990. The book was later adapted into a film and a Broadway musical. Hijuelos also authored "Our House in the Last World," his debut novel, which won the 1985 Rome Prize. His works, often exploring themes of Cuban-American identity, cultural displacement, and music, have been translated into 25 languages.

Hijuelos studied creative writing at the City College of New York, earning both a bachelor's and master's degree before pursuing a full-time writing career. Over the years, he published seven novels, blending lyrical prose with rich character studies. In addition to his literary achievements, he received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. Hijuelos shared his expertise as a professor, teaching at institutions such as Hofstra University and Duke University, where he held a position while dividing his time between New York City and Durham, North Carolina.
