Sam Kean is a best-selling author of history, science, and nonfiction novels. He was raised in South Dakota, where he developed a deep appreciation for the state. As a child, he was an avid reader and quickly became a fast reader, allowing him to read a large number of books. During his teenage years, he studied English and Physics at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. After graduating, he became a teacher at a St. Paul experimental charter school, where the lessons were taught at night.
Kean eventually grew tired of teaching and attempted to move to Europe, but ended up in Washington D.C. instead. Here, he earned his master's degree in library science from the Catholic University of America. Although he has since gone on to become a successful author, this degree has helped him in the research for his novels. Despite his achievements, Kean remains humble and wishes he had a sports team he was passionate about. He currently resides in Washington D.C., where he continues to write and research for his novels.
In addition to his work as an author, Kean has also had his writing featured in various publications, including The New York Times Magazine, Mental Floss, Slate, The Believer, Air & Space, Science, and The New Scientist. He has also worked as a reporter at Science magazine and as a 2009 Middlebury Environmental Journalism fellow. Kean is also active on social media, where he can be followed via Twitter @sam\_kean. He also has a website, samkean.com, where he shares excerpts from his work.
