Beyond her accomplishments as an author, Douglass has an impressive academic background. She received her education at Annesley College in Wayville, a suburb of Adelaide, while working as a Registered Nurse. Douglass later pursued her BA and completed her PhD in early modern English History. Her expertise in medieval history led to a career as a lecturer at La Trobe University in Bendigo. It was during this time that she wrote and published her first novel, BattleAxe, which marked the beginning of her successful career as a fantasy author.
In addition to her creative writing and academic pursuits, Douglass was known for her online presence and engagement with her readers. She once hosted a bulletin board on her website to foster creative thinking and constructive criticism among her followers. Douglass also maintained a blog, Notes from Nonsuch in Tasmania, where she shared updates on a house and garden restoration project.
Sadly, Douglass's life was marked by a battle with ovarian cancer. She was diagnosed in 2008 and, after undergoing treatment, experienced a resurgence of the disease in late 2010. Douglass passed away on 27 September 2011, at the age of 54. Her legacy as a talented and influential fantasy author continues to live on through her extensive body of work.
