Sherman Alexie

Sherman Alexie is an acclaimed American author and poet, best known for his work that draws on his experiences as a Native American with ancestry from several tribes. He was born in Spokane, Washington in October 1966 and grew up on the Spokane Indian Reservation, which is about 50 miles northwest of Spokane, WA. Alexie has published 18 books to date, and his writing often explores the experiences of modern Native Americans.

Alexie's education took him to Reardan High School, Gonzaga University, and Washington State University, where he eventually settled on creative writing as his major. His impressive achievements and accolades have earned him recognition as a leading voice in Native American literature. Alexie has won numerous awards for his work, including the 2010 PEN/Faulkner Award, the 2007 National Book Award for Young People's Literature, the 2001 PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Short Story, and a Special Citation for the 1994 PEN/Hemingway Award for Best First Fiction.

In addition to his work as an author, Alexie is also an occasional comedian. He has written and coproduced films, including Smoke Signals, which won both the Audience Award and the Filmmakers Trophy at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival. Alexie's most recent works include Blasphemy, a collection of short stories, and Face, a book of poetry. He currently lives in Seattle, Washington with his family.
