Sherri L. Smith is a distinguished author of young adult novels, who has made a significant impact in the literary world with her compelling and thought-provoking works. Prior to becoming a novelist, Sherri had a diverse range of experiences, including working on the movie Mars Attacks!, doing stop-motion animation, for Disney TV Animation, for a construction company at LAX airport, and for Bongo Comics (the publishers of Simpsons comics). These varied experiences have undoubtedly contributed to the rich and nuanced worlds she creates in her novels.
Smith's writing is particularly notable for its exploration of social issues, providing young adult readers with insightful perspectives on the challenges and complexities of growing up. Her books often feature the theme of transition, drawing from her own experiences of moving from coast to coast of the USA. This theme is encapsulated in her quote, "Bad things happen everywhere, even in the land of roses," which is a testament to her ability to tackle difficult topics in a way that is both relatable and engaging for young readers.
Smith has received numerous accolades for her work, including the 2009 California Book Awards Gold Medalist for her novel Flygirl, which was also named a best book of the year by the Washington Post. Her middle grade historical fantasy, The Toymaker’s Apprentice, and her contemporary YA noir mystery, Pasadena, have both won the Southern California Independent Booksellers Award. She has also been recognized for her nonfiction work, with her book Who Were the Tuskegee Airmen? being part of the NY Times bestselling Who Was? series.
In addition to her writing, Smith has made significant contributions to the literary community as a judge for the 2014 National Book Awards in Young People’s Literature and as a writer-in-residence at Hedgebrook, the Wellstone Center, and Wassard Elea. She is also a dedicated educator, teaching in the MFA Writing Program at Goddard College and the MFA in Children’s Writing Program at Hamline University. Smith's commitment to her craft and her passion for sharing her knowledge with others is evident in her wide-ranging and impactful career.
