Silas House is a highly acclaimed author, best known for his literary fiction novels. He has published six novels, including "Clay's Quilt," "A Parchment of Leaves," "The Coal Tattoo," "Eli the Good," "Same Sun Here" (co-authored with Neela Vaswani), and "Southernmost." In addition to his novels, House has also written a book of creative nonfiction titled "Something's Rising" and three plays. His work has frequently appeared in various publications such as The Atlantic, The New York Times, Salon, Time, Ecotone, Oxford American, and Garden and Gun.
House is a former commentator for NPR's "All Things Considered" and has received three honorary doctorates. He has won numerous awards for his writing, including the Nautilus Award, an EB White Award, the Storylines Prize from the New York Public Library/NAV Foundation, the Appalachian Book of the Year, and many others. House is also a music writer who has worked with artists such as Kacey Musgraves, Jason Isbell, Lee Ann Womack, Kris Kristofferson, Lucinda Williams, The Judds, Jim James, and many others.
Currently, House serves on the fiction faculty at the Spalding School of Writing and as the National Endowment for the Humanities Chair at Berea College. He also hosts a popular podcast called "On the Porch with Silas House," where he has conversations with notable figures such as bell hooks, Ashley Judd, Allison Moorer, Barbara Kingsolver, and others. House's books have received critical acclaim, with his latest novel, "Southernmost," being longlisted for the Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction and his first three books being reissued in 2020 with new supplemental material, including new forewords, author notes, and a family tree.
