Stephen Greenblatt

Stephen Greenblatt is an accomplished American author and professor, best known for his contributions to literary criticism and theory. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts on November 7, 1943, but grew up in nearby Newton. Greenblatt received his Ph.D. from Yale and currently holds the position of Cogan University Professor of English and American Literature and Language at Harvard University. In addition to his academic role, he serves as the General Editor of The Norton Anthology of English Literature.

Greenblatt is widely regarded as one of the founders of New Historicism, a critical approach that emphasizes the cultural, political, and social contexts of literary works. He often refers to this method as "cultural poetics" and has been a major influence in the field since introducing the term in the early 1980s. Greenblatt has written and edited numerous books, articles, and collections of criticism, primarily focusing on new historicism, culture, Renaissance studies, and Shakespeare studies. He is also a co-founder of the literary-cultural journal Representations.

Throughout his career, Greenblatt has received various honors and awards, including the MLA's James Russell Lowell Prize for "Shakespearean Negotiations: The Circulation of Social Energy in Renaissance England," the Distinguished Humanist Award from the Mellon Foundation, and the Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of California, Berkeley. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the American Philosophical Society. In 2016, Greenblatt was named the Holberg Prize Laureate in recognition of his outstanding work in the humanities. His most popular book, "Will in the World: How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare," spent nine weeks on the New York Times Best Seller List. Greenblatt currently resides in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Vermont.
