Steve Cavanagh is an Irish author, renowned for his popular Eddie Flynn series of books. Despite his Irish background, the series is based in the United States and follows the story of a former con-artist turned trial lawyer. Although readers have often assumed that Eddie Flynn is based on Cavanagh himself, due to their similar professions, the author insists that Eddie is a distinct character with his own unique personality and experiences.
Cavanagh was born and raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He stumbled into law entirely by accident, having been accepted into university for either Law or Business & Marketing. After a night of heavy drinking, he found himself in the Law queue, and by the time he realized his mistake, it was too late to change his course. He would later undertake a Master in Law while living in Cardiff, during which time he began writing screenplays. Although he never made a career out of screenwriting, his foray into writing would eventually lead him to become a successful author.
After completing his Master in Law, Cavanagh became an investigator with a reputable law firm in Belfast, working on various cases ranging from catastrophic incidents to road traffic collisions. He later became a solicitor, gaining valuable experience and becoming one of the best young lawyers in the country. In 2009, he moved into civil rights law and made a name for himself when he represented a factory worker in a historic racial abuse case that resulted in a landmark damages ruling. In addition to practicing law, Cavanagh also lectures on various legal subjects in the UK and Ireland.
Cavanagh's success as an author is equally impressive. His Eddie Flynn series has sold over a million copies in the UK and has been adapted for television. His third novel, The Liar, won the CWA Gold Dagger for Crime Novel of the year 2018, while Thirteen won the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime novel of the year 2019. FIFTY FIFTY was a Richard and Judy Book club choice, and the BBC Between The Covers book club choice. All of his novels have been nominated for major awards, and his last four novels have been Sunday Times Bestsellers. Cavanagh's books can be read in any order, and his latest novel, The Accomplice, was published in 2022.
