Steven Saylor is a highly regarded American author, best known for his historical fiction and gay erotic fiction, which he publishes under the pseudonym Aaron Travis. He was born on March 23, 1956, in Port Lavaca, Texas, and went on to study history and classics at the University of Texas, Austin. This academic background is evident in his work, particularly in his Roma Sub Rosa series, which is set in ancient Rome during the time of Cicero, Cleopatra, Sulla, and Julius Caesar.
Saylor's Roma Sub Rosa series features the main character Gordianus the Finder, as well as many famous Roman figures. The series has been widely popular, with translations in over 20 languages. In addition to the Roma Sub Rosa series, Saylor has written contemporary standalone titles, as well as the New York Times bestselling novel, Roma, and its follow-up, Empire.
Saylor has been with his partner Richard since 1976, and they split their time between California and Texas. In addition to his writing, Saylor has appeared as an on-air expert on Roman history and life on The History Channel.
