The story follows Maxine and Seb, a couple who have just bought a Georgian townhouse that needs a lot of work. As they move in, they begin to experience a series of problems that make Max question her relationship with Seb and her decision to buy the house. Meanwhile, the novel also explores the history of the house, going back to 1843 when Horatio built the house for his beloved wife, who died in mysterious circumstances. The novel is a beautifully crafted exploration of the past's impact on the present and the power of secrets to shape our lives.
