Susan Dexter

Susan Dexter is a fantasy author best known for her "Wizard's Destiny" trilogy, originally published as "The Winter King's War." Her debut novel, "The Ring of Allaire," launched her writing career in 1981 and introduced readers to her signature blend of magical quests and richly imagined worlds. Among her notable works, "The Wizard’s Shadow" earned recognition from the New York Public Library as one of their "Books for the Teen Age" in 1993. Dexter has revisited and expanded her earlier trilogy, infusing it with new depth for contemporary audiences.

Dexter’s writing often explores themes of wizardry, destiny, and personal growth, with a distinctive touch of humor—as evidenced by her playful comparison of her protagonist Tristan to Harry Potter, noting he was "home-schooled." Her creative process is deeply intertwined with her artistic talents; she illustrates her own book covers and has described drafting early stories in illustrated diaries. Before dedicating herself to writing full-time, Dexter worked as a librarian and teacher, professions that reflect her lifelong engagement with storytelling and education.

A recipient of multiple awards, Dexter earned the Merit Award from the Lawrence County Open Arts Show in 1976, followed by Distinguished Awards in 1982 and 1983. She resides in New Castle, Pennsylvania, in a historic home restored through the proceeds of her book sales. Dexter continues to refine her earlier works while maintaining an active presence in the fantasy genre, blending her passions for writing and visual art.
