Susan Hubbard

Susan Hubbard is an acclaimed American author, known for her works in young adult and literary fiction. She was born in upstate New York and has since authored two collections of short fiction, both of which have won national prizes. Additionally, she has written four novels, including the bestselling "Ethical Vampire" series, which has been translated and published in over 15 countries.

Hubbard's first published novel, "Lisa Maria's Guide for the Perplexed," was released in 2004, but she had already established herself as a talented writer with a short story collection titled "Blue Money." This collection won the best book of prose Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize. She has also won the Short Fiction Prize by the Association of Writers and Writing Programs for her short story "Walking on Ice."

In addition to her writing, Hubbard is an accomplished editor. Alongside Robley Wilson, she edited the anthology of contemporary stories titled "100% Pure Florida Fiction." Her short fiction has been featured in numerous journals, including Ploughshares, The Mississippi Review, and TriQuarterly.

Hubbard is a professor of English at the University of Central Florida, where she has received several teaching awards. She has also led writing workshops at universities and arts programs across the United States and the United Kingdom. She is an advocate for animal rights, social justice, academic etiquette, and literacy. In her spare time, she enjoys running, salvaging, and collecting items of questionable taste.

Hubbard's "Ethical Vampire" series has been praised by critics, with NPR calling it "elusive, complex, poetic, and sophisticated." The Ft. Myers News-Press described "The Society of S" as "the year's most intriguing fiction debut to date," and The Sacramento Bee summarized the novel as "a touching coming-of-age story about a child in search of her missing mother." The St. Petersburg Times noted that Hubbard "tells a good story and provides some acerbic political satire" in her works.
