Susan Kay

Susan Kay is a British author best known for her historical fiction and gothic-inspired works. Her most celebrated novel, "Phantom," delves into the backstory of Erik, the enigmatic protagonist from Gaston Leroux's "The Phantom of the Opera," presenting his life through seven distinct character perspectives. Prior to this, Kay gained recognition with her debut novel, "Legacy," a richly detailed portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I, which earned her both the Georgette Heyer Historical Novel Prize and the Betty Trask Award in 1985.

Before pursuing writing full-time, Kay worked as a primary school teacher. Her meticulous research process, including visits to the Paris Opera House for "Phantom," underscores her commitment to authenticity, though she notably did not travel to Iran for the same project. Her works often explore complex historical figures with psychological depth, blending fact with imaginative storytelling. Kay resides in Cheshire with her husband and two children, where she continues to write.
