Terry Devane

Jeremiah Healy was a prolific author best known for his John Francis Cuddy private investigator series and the Mairead O’Clare legal-thriller series, written under the pseudonym Terry Devane. His eighteen novels and over sixty short stories earned critical acclaim, with fifteen works nominated for or winning the prestigious Shamus Award. Notable titles in the Cuddy series include "Rescue," "Invasion of Privacy," "The Only Good Lawyer," and "Spiral," while his O’Clare novels, such as "Uncommon Justice," "Juror Number Eleven," and "A Stain Upon the Robe," showcased his expertise in legal thrillers. The latter was optioned for a feature film in 2003.

Before becoming a full-time writer, Healy spent eighteen years as a professor at the New England School of Law, drawing from his legal background to craft authentic courtroom drama and investigative narratives. His works, primarily set in Boston, were celebrated for their sharp dialogue, intricate plots, and well-researched procedural details. Healy's influence extended beyond his writing—he served as President of the Private Eye Writers of America and the International Association of Crime Writers, further cementing his reputation in the mystery genre.

Healy's international appeal was evident through translations of his books into French, Japanese, Italian, Spanish, and German. A sought-after speaker, he presented at prestigious venues such as the Smithsonian Institution, the Sorbonne, and literary festivals worldwide. Recognized for his contributions to crime fiction, he was honored as toastmaster at the 1996 Bouchercon and as the American Guest of Honour at Bouchercon 2004 in Toronto. His legacy endures through his impactful storytelling and dedication to the mystery community.
