Thomas D. Seeley

Thomas D. Seeley is the Horace White Professor in Biology Emeritus at Cornell University, where he dedicated his career to researching honey bee behavior, social life, and ecology. A prolific author, he has written several acclaimed books, including "Honeybee Ecology," "The Wisdom of the Hive," and "Honeybee Democracy," all published by Princeton University Press. His works explore the intricate social systems and decision-making processes of honey bees, blending scientific rigor with accessible prose for both academic and general audiences.

Seeley's fascination with bees began in 1969 when, as a high school student, he captured his first swarm in Ithaca, New York. This early curiosity led him to pursue graduate studies at Harvard University, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1978 with a thesis on swarm behavior. His research has spanned diverse environments, including Thailand's forests, where he studied multiple honey bee species. Recognized for his contributions, he has received prestigious honors such as a Guggenheim Fellowship and membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

In addition to his scholarly work, Seeley has authored books like "Following the Wild Bees" and "The Lives of Bees," which illuminate the natural history and ecological significance of honey bees. His latest publication, "Piping Hot Bees and Boisterous Buzz-Runners," continues his tradition of merging scientific insight with engaging storytelling. Seeley's lifelong dedication to understanding bees has cemented his reputation as a leading authority in the field.
