Tim Severin

Tim Severin is a renowned British author, explorer, historian, and filmmaker. He was born on September 25, 1940, in Assam, India, and later attended Tonbridge School in Kent, England. Severin went on to study geography and history at Keble College, Oxford.

Severin is best known for his work in retracing the legendary journeys of historical figures. He has sailed a leather boat across the Atlantic in the wake of the Irish monk Saint Brendan, captained an Arab sailing ship from Muscat to China, and steered the replica of a Bronze Age galley to seek the landfalls of Jason and the Argonauts and Ulysses. His work has earned him numerous awards, including the Gold Medal of the Royal Geographical Society, the Livingstone Medal of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society, and the Thomas Cook Travel Book Award for his 1982 book "The Sinbad Voyage."

In addition to his non-fiction works, Severin has also written historical fiction. His Viking Series, which began in 2005, follows a young Viking adventurer who travels the world. In 2007, he published "The Adventures of Hector Lynch" series set in the late 17th century about a 17-year-old Corsair. Severin's travels have been the subject of award-winning documentary films and a major BBC documentary series, and he has written regularly about his expeditions in the National Geographic Magazine.

Tim Severin's contributions to the fields of exploration, history, and literature have been widely recognized. He has been awarded the Gold Medal (Founder's Medal) of the Royal Geographical Society and the Livingstone Medal of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. He has also received honorary degrees from Trinity College, Dublin, and the National University of Ireland. Severin lives in Co. Cork, Ireland.
