Timothy Jay Smith is a prolific author, known for his works in literature & fiction, gay & lesbian, and mystery & thrillers. Raised in a small green trailer that was pulled behind the family car, Smith traveled across America in his childhood. This experience instilled in him a ceaseless wanderlust that has taken him around the world. Through his travels, he has encountered a wide array of people, from arms dealers and mercenaries to Greek fishers and child prostitutes. These experiences have provided him with a wealth of knowledge and understanding of different cultures and societies, which he incorporates into his writing.
In his career, Smith has won top honors for his novels, screenplays, and stage plays in numerous prestigious competitions. His novel, Fire on the Island, won the Gold Medal in the 2017 Faulkner-Wisdom Competition for the Novel, and his screenplay adaptation of it was named Best Indie Script by WriteMovies. Another novel, The Fourth Courier, set in Poland, received tremendous reviews and is currently competing in many competitions. Previously, he won the Paris Prize for Fiction (now the Paris Literary Prize) for his novel, A Vision of Angels. Smith's writing is highly regarded for its literary dynamite, as evidenced by Kirkus Reviews' selection of Cooper's Promise as one of the Best Books of 2012.
Smith's international career has seen him engage in various adventures, including smuggling banned plays from behind the Iron Curtain, maneuvering through Occupied Territories, representing the U.S. at the highest levels of foreign governments, and stowing away aboard a 'devil's barge' for a three-day crossing from Cape Verde that landed him in an African jail. These experiences have provided him with a unique perspective and understanding of the world, which he brings to his writing. Smith is also an avid theater-goer and playwright himself, with his stage play, How High the Moon, winning the prestigious Stanley Drama Award. He is the founder of the Smith Prize for Political Theater.
