She has a unique ability to create stories that resonate with a wide range of readers, addressing various issues in an honest and truthful manner. Dangarembga's outspokenness and creative voice have earned her recognition both nationally and internationally. Dangarembga spent part of her childhood in England, where she began her education. She later returned to Zimbabwe, where she completed her A-levels in a missionary school in the town of Mutare. After studying medicine at Cambridge University, she returned home to Zimbabwe as the country was transitioning to black-majority rule in 1980. Dangarembga then studied psychology at the University of Zimbabwe, where she was a member of the drama group. She also worked as a copywriter at a marketing agency, which provided her with early writing experience. This experience led her to write numerous plays and join the theatre group Zambuko, where she participated in the production of several plays.

In 1985, Dangarembga published a short story in Sweden called "The Letter," and in 1987, she published the play "She Does Not Weep" in Harare. Her first taste of success came in 1988 with the publication of her novel "Nervous Conditions," which won the African section of the Commonwealth Writers Prize in 1989. Since then, she has continued to write and has also turned to film direction. Dangarembga has studied film direction in Berlin at the Deutsche Film und Fernseh Akademie and has produced several film productions, including a documentary for German television. She is currently working on the third novel in the trilogy that began with "Nervous Conditions" and continues in "The Book of Not."
