Vanessa Lafaye

Vanessa LaFaye was an American-born author who spent much of her life in England after moving to Europe in 1987. She gained recognition for her historical fiction set in Florida, particularly her debut novel "Under a Dark Summer Sky," which explored themes of racial injustice and natural disaster inspired by the 1935 Labor Day hurricane. Her second novel, "Summertime," continued her focus on Florida's history, followed by "First Light." LaFaye's final novel was published posthumously.

Before becoming a novelist, LaFaye worked in academic publishing, including at Oxford University Press, while also writing feature articles for newspapers. Her writing often drew from her Florida upbringing, blending vivid depictions of the natural world with historical events. A breast cancer survivor, she documented her experiences in the blog "Living While Dying" and channeled personal resilience into her work. Beyond writing, LaFaye founded the Marlborough Community Choir in Wiltshire, England, where she served as a vocal leader, finding both creative fulfillment and healing through music.
