Walter M. Miller, Jr. was an American science fiction writer best known for his acclaimed novel "A Canticle for Leibowitz," which won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1961. Born in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, Miller served as a radioman and tail gunner during World War II, an experience that profoundly influenced his writing. Between 1951 and 1957, he published over three dozen short stories, earning a Hugo Award in 1955 for "The Darfsteller." His seminal work, "A Canticle for Leibowitz," emerged from three interconnected novellas and became a landmark in post-apocalyptic fiction, exploring themes of history, faith, and cyclical destruction.
Miller's writing often reflected his deep engagement with Catholicism and the moral complexities of war and technology. Educated at the University of Tennessee and the University of Texas, he initially worked as an engineer before transitioning to a full-time writing career. His brief stint scripting for the television show "Captain Video" in 1953 showcased his versatility. Despite the success of "A Canticle for Leibowitz," Miller withdrew from public life and published no new works after its release, though collections of his earlier stories continued to appear.
In his later years, Miller lived reclusively, battling depression and PTSD stemming from his wartime experiences. He left behind an unfinished manuscript for a sequel to "A Canticle for Leibowitz," titled "Saint Leibowitz and the Wild Horse Woman," which was posthumously completed by Terry Bisson and published in 1997. Miller's legacy endures through his poignant explorations of humanity's resilience and the enduring power of faith amid devastation.
