Caitlin Doughty is an accomplished American mortician and author, with a focus on non-fiction books that tackle the subject of death. She is perhaps best known for her New York Times bestselling memoir, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. Doughty's other notable works include From Here to Eternity and Will, My Cat, Eat My Eyeballs?, which, like her memoir, approach the topic of death with a unique blend of humor and sensitivity.
In addition to her work as an author, Doughty runs her own funeral home in Los Angeles. This hands-on experience in the funeral industry has informed much of her writing and has given her a unique perspective on the topic of death. Doughty's experience in the funeral industry began when she was just 23 years old, when she took a job as a crematory operator. This early experience in the industry is chronicled in her first book, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.
Beyond her work as a mortician and author, Doughty is also a prominent death acceptance advocate. She is the founder of The Order of the Good Death, a nonprofit organization that aims to change the way people think and talk about death. Doughty is also the creator of the popular "Ask a Mortician" web series, which addresses a wide range of questions and concerns related to death and the funeral industry. Through her writing, her funeral home, and her advocacy work, Doughty is at the forefront of a movement to increase death awareness and promote death positivity in Western society.
