Chris Cander is a bestselling American author who has written novels for adults, children’s books, and screenplays. She has written several highly acclaimed novels, including "The Young of Other Animals," "A Gracious Neighbor," "The Weight of a Piano," "Whisper Hollow," and "11 Stories." Cander has also written a picture book for grade K-5 students called "The Word Burglar."
Cander's work has been widely recognized and honored. "The Weight of a Piano" was named an Indie Next Great Read in both hardcover and paperback and was praised by the New York Times for its "immense, intense and imaginative" storytelling. "Whisper Hollow" was also named an Indie Next Great Read, and "11 Stories" was named one of the best books of 2013 by Kirkus and won the Independent Publisher Book Awards for fiction. Cander's children's book, "The Word Burglar," has been published in twelve languages.
In addition to her work as an author, Cander has also served as a writer-in-residence for Houston-based Writers in The Schools, where she taught creative writing to children for seven years. She is a passionate advocate for the literary arts and serves on the Inprint Houston advisory board and maintains several Little Free Libraries in her community.
Cander is also a woman of many talents outside of writing. She holds a 4th dan in taekwondo and is a certified women’s defensive tactics instructor. She was a fitness competitor and model in the past. Cander is married and has two young adult children. She currently resides in Houston.
