Despite the geographical and cultural differences between herself and her Amish friends, Woodsmall has built and maintained deep relationships with them, which she draws upon in her writing.

Woodsmall's fascination with Amish culture began in her childhood, when she became best friends with a Plain Mennonite girl named Luann. Despite the numerous obstacles and challenges posed by their different lifestyles, the two girls forged a strong bond that lasted into their teenage years. After moving away, Woodsmall's interest in Amish culture was rekindled when she became friends with an Old Order Amish family as an adult. This friendship provided Woodsmall with a unique perspective on Amish life, which she has used to inform and enrich her writing. Woodsmall and her husband currently reside near the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains.
