Edmund Cooper was a prolific English author who wrote in a wide variety of genres using multiple pseudonyms, including Richard Avery, George Kinley, Martin Lester, and Broderick Quain. He is best known for his works in speculative fiction, but he also published romances, detective stories, and children's books.
Cooper was born in Marple, near Stockport in Cheshire, on April 30, 1926. After serving in the Merchant Navy towards the end of the Second World War, he trained as a teacher and began to publish short stories. His first novel, Deadly Image (later republished as The Uncertain Midnight), was completed in 1957 and published in 1958. Cooper's writing career spanned over two decades, and he was a regular reviewer of science fiction for the Sunday Times during the 1970s.
One of Cooper's notable achievements was the adaptation of his 1956 short story, Brain Child, into the movie The Invisible Boy in 1957. Additionally, his novel The Uncertain Midnight was adapted for Swiss television in French in 1969. Unfortunately, there is no longer an Edmund Cooper website that provides information about the author and his publications, but his works continue to be celebrated and read by many.
