Edna Buchanan is an accomplished American author, renowned for her work in crime fiction and mystery novels, as well as true crime non-fiction books. Born in Paterson, New Jersey, Buchanan discovered her passion for writing at the early age of four. She pursued this interest and began her career in journalism at a small newspaper before moving to Florida.
In the late 1960s, Buchanan started working as a reporter for the Miami Beach Daily Sun. Her big break came in 1970 when she was hired as a general assignment and police-beat reporter at the Miami Herald. This role coincided with Miami's emergence as a significant center of the international drug trade, leading to a surge in crime rates. Buchanan's exceptional reporting skills and dedication to her job covering violent deaths, kidnappings, riots, and other high-profile cases earned her a Pulitzer Prize in 1986.
In addition to her Pulitzer Prize, Buchanan has received numerous other accolades for her work, including the George Polk Award for Career Achievement in Journalism. She has also authored several books, both non-fiction and fiction, which have been translated into eleven languages. Her true-crime memoirs, "The Corpse Had a Familiar Face" and "Never Let Them See You Cry," have received international acclaim. Buchanan's first novel of suspense, "Nobody Lives Forever," was nominated for an Edgar Award. She has since retired from journalism and focuses on writing mystery novels, many of which feature the main character, Britt Montero. Buchanan continues to reside in Miami Beach, Florida, a city that has provided her with a wealth of inspiration for her writing.
