Edward Humes is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and journalist based in Southern California. He has written numerous books and articles on topics ranging from criminal justice and social justice to the environment. His latest book, "The Forever Witness: How DNA and Genealogy Solved a Cold Case Double Murder," is a nonfiction thriller that delves into the power of genetic genealogy in solving crimes.
Humes' interest in writing began at a young age, and he has been a professional writer ever since. He started his career in newspapers while still in college, and was drawn to assignments that allowed him to explore stories in depth. This interest in digging deeper led him to leave newspapers and begin writing nonfiction books, where he could spend weeks or months immersed in his topics. Humes' books take readers inside worlds that many of us do not have the opportunity to experience firsthand, such as the California high school that went from worst to best, the harrowing world of a neonatal intensive care unit, and the surprising truths we can learn from the contents of our garbage cans.
In addition to his writing, Humes is an active member of the greyhound rescue community and shares his home office with two rescued racing greyhounds, Valiant and Dottie. He was born in Philadelphia and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts. Humes currently resides in Southern California. His next book, "Total Garbage: How to Fix Our Waste and Heal Our World," is set to be published in time for Earth Day 2024.
